30. The Present, Part Eighteen

“Tuna?” Snow's voice was the first thing Crow heard. He felt almost as bad as the day he healed from his Deathseeker wounds, but it wasn't so bad that he couldn't open his eyes and sit up. Faith rose with him, her ears twitching. Apparently she had been laying beside him.

“Can't wait 'til we tell Fox about this.” Mourn was saying. He and the others were sitting in a circle a few feet away. They didn't have a fire and were eating cold food out of cans, but they somehow managed to look more relaxed than before.

“Don't suppose I could get some of that.” Crow said. His voice was hoarse as if he hadn't spoken in months.

“You're awake.” Snow said.

“Yeah, and hungry.” She reached into her bag, pulled out a can, popped it open with her knife, and slid it across the floor. Chicken noodle soup. Perfect. “Thanks.” Crow sipped from the can like it was a refreshing beverage, barely chewing the chunks of chicken, carrots, celery, and noodles. It was only when it was all gone that he realized they were on the platform where the man in the mask had been standing. “So what's new?”

“Other than the gold mine we're sitting on?” Saber replied. “Not much. Those two freak shows are gone, we found another way back out, and best of all, Gloom's corpse is a pile of sludge.” He lifted his can of kidney beans in a sort of salute. “We have you to thank for that one.”

“Not entirely.” Crow said. “Someone shot Gloom in the back, distracted him so that I could get the shot off. Who was it?” No one said anything, but they didn't need to. Crow got his answer from Snow's unwavering stare into the depths of her tuna. “That was you?”

“I climbed up to the machine guns.” She said. “Took me awhile to figure out how to load one, but...” She trailed off and stuck a piece of tuna in her mouth.

“Thank you.” Crow murmured. Snow shrugged.

“You were right. I should have been helping, but I can barely even hold a gun anymore, let alone shoot one.”

“You just peppered a giant monster with the biggest gun in the room.” Siren said. “I'd say that's pretty damn impressive.” Snow laughed sheepishly, brushing a lock of hair behind her ear.

“I don't know about the biggest gun in the room.” Mourn said, waving his fork in Crow's direction. “That, uh, shotgun thing. What was that?”

“I don't know.” Crow said. “I've never seen anything like it. The recoil was like getting hit by a truck.”

“Think it's alien?” Saber asked. “Like your nanomachines.”

“No.” Jieva said, appearing out of thin air. No one flinched this time, not even Mourn. “I don't have a whole lot of information on my creators, but the data I do have suggests that the nanomachines and other types of bio-organic technology were their main methods of attack and defense. It's likely that this weapon was created by humans, perhaps even as far back as the ancient war.
